Neo / Ipsum

In addition to my games projects I also make efforts to broaden my development skills. With that in mind I started learning how to make PowerPoint add-ins. After making some simple Macros as a “how to” introduction it was suggested that I make an add-in that inserts Lorem Ipsum text in to PowerPoint slides.

Now you are probably wondering “What  is Lorem Ipsum?” Lorem Ipsum is dummy text that is used to see how a document will look when it has real content in it. Some say that it a collection of nonsensical things that look like words, while others say that it is based on a Latin text. Here’s a sample of Lorem Ipsum text:

Lorem ipsum dolor sit amet, consectetur adipiscing elit, sed do eiusmod tempor incididunt ut labore et dolore magna aliqua. Ut enim ad minim veniam, quis nostrud exercitation ullamco laboris nisi ut aliquip ex ea commodo consequat.

In addition to this base version, people have created there own themed versions of Lorem Ipsum, such as Zombie Ipsum, Hipster Ipsum, Bacon Ipsum, Beer Ipsum, even Tuna Ipsum. These other versions all serve the same purpose of the classic Lorem Ipsum, making dummby text, but do it in a more amusing way.

Why does it work? Why should I use it? When testing or showing a layout or design for a presentation you want text to be in the slides so you can show something closer to the final product. But if you put real sentences in there with a coherent structure the viewer will be reading that text instead of evaluating the layout. By putting in dummy text that makes no sense the user can see what it will look like without being overly distracted by reading the slides.

So I made Neo / Ipsum. It is designed to put various themes of Ipsums in to a PowerPoint presentation. Unlike some Ipsum programs my app uses a series of quotes that it randomly chooses between instead of randomizing words and hoping that it looks like a sentence. Neo / Ipsum includes custom Ipsums I’ve assembled. These include Comic Ipsum, Sci-Fi Ipsum, and Sports Ipsum.
